The Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship presents:
Tuesday February 10th 2015
Prof. Will Lowe (The University of Mannheim):
Room 233 Education Building, McGill University
8:30 am – 11:30 pm
“Practical Aspects of Content Analysis Workshop.”
This workshop will introduce tools for getting research data from websites, demonstrate how to combine those tools into a research data workflow, and discuss how to deal with common web-related problems. We will concentrate on the extraction of and analysis of textual data from web pages, although the tools are equally useful for extracting tabular, numerical, and other forms of information. We will also discuss ways in which quantitative content analysis techniques can be applied to political texts. The workshop is built around a worked example using R which shows how to go from the identification of relevant web pages, through the construction of a data matrix, to an initial content analysis. Some familiarity with R will therefore be helpful, though not essential. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops.

The workshop is free and open to all CSDC students.
