The CSDC is pleased to announce its first methods workshop of this academic year:
THE CHALLENGE OF POLITICAL TEXT-AS-DATA
by Arthur Spirling (New York University)
November 13, 2015
11am – 1pm
Room 406, Thomson House, McGill University (3650 McTavish Street)
Workshop outline: We consider the relationship between text-as-data in political science and its use in other disciplines such as computer science. While learning from allied fields offers exciting opportunities, we must first overcome several challenges including different understandings of causality and the importance of modeling human behaviour. I will present an overview of some of these issues, especially as they have arisen in my own work on parliamentary discourse and treaty-making.
