Title: When the Promise Changes: Political Language and the Canadian Understanding of Trade Policy

My master's thesis aims to examine whether changes in Political Language influence the standards Canadians use to evaluate government performance. As a subsequent topic, I am focusing on Canada's response to U.S. tariffs, and the project's intention is to investigate what happens when governments shift their justification for a policy from economic benefits, such as protecting jobs, toward broader national goals such as sovereignty, resilience, and national independence. Can this shift influence what citizens consider a successful policy, even when its economic outcomes remain disappointing or misunderstood.
