Research Centre Manager, Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship (ADM2B, GR 5)

Position Context:
The Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship (CSDC) is an inter-university Centre currently based at McGill University with approximately 30 faculty members and their students and postdocs from five Québec universities. It is an active hub of research support and research-related events, activities and training. More information about the Centre can be found at: The CSDC currently seeks a dynamic person to fill the position of Research Centre Manager.

Position description
The Research Centre Manager works closely with the Centre Director and helps to set the Centre’s agenda and organizes the Centre’s activities. The manager’s tasks are organizational, administrative, communicative, and financial in nature.

Primary Responsibilities:
Administration and communication
• Manage and oversee all the administrative activities of the Centre;
• Implement administrative procedures, policies and processes within the Centre;
• Research, develop and promote standards and practices required for compliance of University processes with external agency regulations;
• Participate in the development and implementation of policies and new initiatives that support the strategic direction of the Centre;
• Liaise with all units within Financial Services, Office of Sponsored Research, Faculties/departments as well as other appropriate units within the University;
• Develop and maintain the Centre databases; the preparation of the Centre’s annual report and report to university units and funders;
• Analyze problems, determine course of action, and provide advice to the Centre Director on problem resolution;
• Supervise and train casual employees in the daily operations of the Centre;
• Oversight of the Centre’s communication activities, including website and social media platforms.
• Maintain contact with the media and other communication outlets, as well as non-academic and academic partners and organizations.
• Participate in ad hoc project assigned by senior management;

Financial management
• Administer, monitor and reconcile the financial operations and budget of the Centre.
• Advise supervisor on status of accounts, prepare quarterly and annual financial reports;

Event planning
• Manage and organize a wide range of research events, academic and policy-oriented seminars, public outreach activities, workshops, the annual retreat, training activities, steering committee meetings, and other events;
• Supervise the hospitality, travel and facilities arrangements for Centre members and visitors.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
• Strong strategic thinking and demonstrated financial analytical skills.
• Previous experience in budget procedures and financial research administration.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, solve problems, take initiative, prioritize and work well under pressure and to meet deadlines.
• Must be client service oriented.
• Proven ability to communicate well with staff at all levels, international experts in their field, government leaders as well as visitors from other Quebec universities.
• Organizational skills and proven ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
• Ability to work in PC environment using advanced spreadsheet skills, databases, email, as well as experience with Minerva, Banner (FIS) and Crystal Reports is desired.
• Demonstrated knowledge of University administrative policies and procedures would be an asset.
• English and French, spoken and written.

Faculty of Arts
Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship

Minimum Education & Experience:
• Undergraduate degree or Masters degree with either coursework or work experience in a social science discipline (e.g. political science, political communication, sociology, economics or other)
• Three (3) years’ related experience in a financial and office management role, preferably in an academic setting;
• Financial experience within McGill University and experience managing a staff team is highly desirable.

Salary Range:
(Grade 05) $55,400 – $69,300 (midpoint) – $90,100

Hours: 33.75

Duration: 1 Year (April 15, 2018 to April 14, 2019 with the possibility of extension (subject to performance and funding approval)
