Pro-immigration attitudes in Europe
Date and place: Friday March 10 @. 2p.m., Thomson House – Room 404, 3650 Rue McTavish, Montréal, QC H3A 1Y2
Immigration has become a central political issue in countries across Europe and North America. Debates about immigration often feel deeply divisive and polarized because extreme pro and anti-immigration supporters have radically different visions for the future of their societies. However, most academic and public attention has been on the anti-immigration side of the debate, because those views are considered immoral and in need of explanation. As a result, we know very little about the pro-immigration side of the spectrum. In this book, I analyze pro-immigration attitudes in Europe. I first provide an overview of the extent of pro-immigration attitudes, their development over time, and what kinds of people are more likely to hold pro-immigration attitudes. I then examine the depth of commitment to pro-immigration attitudes and the nuances of how they relate to various pro-immigration behaviors.
