Abstract: Prior work in political science has suggested that uncertainty has an impact on political evaluations, yet the exact mechanisms by which uncertainty affects the minds of citizens remain unclear. In this work, we use functional MRI (fMRI) to examine how people make decisions about political information that is uncertain (vs. certain) and incongruent (vs. congruent) with expectations. Results suggest that neural activity in brain regions previously implicated in evaluative processing (anterior cingulate cortex, insular cortex, orbitofrontal cortex) differed as a function of the interaction between uncertainty and incongruence. Implications for the study of emotion and politics and candidate perception are discussed.
