Title: A political economy of multilateral development bank membership: borrower preferences, public opinion, and contested multilateralism
In my thesis, I explore how governments exploit the international regime complex of development finance and "shop" around multilateral development banks to achieve their preferred policy outcomes. Multilateral development banks are interesting because it plays a role of intermediaries between governments and financial markets. In part of the thesis, I ask how governments' borrowings from these banks are perceived by the population, especially in developing countries that experience a high level of financial distress.
