Student Funding – Research Grant

CSDC Students and Postdoctoral Research Grant 2023-2024

Introduction:

One of the CSDC’s central missions is to provide an enriched training environment for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

 

Objective:

These research grants are meant to facilitate:

  • thesis-related research or;
  • knowledge mobilization ideas or;
  • collaborations between 2 or more students from different universities or disciplines related to the research axes of the CSDC, that are not eligible or suitable for funding from other sources.

Research projects should be related to the CSDC research axis.

 

Eligibility:

All CSDC graduate students and post-doctoral fellows are eligible for funding.

Note: grants can only be dispersed while you are a CSDC graduate student or post-doctoral fellow and can under no circumstances be paid after you have left.

 

Deadline:

The deadline for this competition is May 31, 2024.

 

Eligible expenses:

Eligible expenses under FRQSC rules include travel, graduate student stipends, hiring research professionals and technicians, administrative support, and equipment purchases.

Note: These research grants fund research expenses; they cannot be used to meet the personal expenses of applicants.

Subject payments and research assistants are not eligible expenses for the FRQSC, however, they can be funded within this competition thanks to the financial contributions of some partner universities. Please contact cecd-csdc@umontreal.ca to receive confirmation of the eligibility for such expenses at your university. before submitting your application.

 

Assessment of Applications:

The grants will be awarded on a competitive basis. Applications are reviewed by the CSDC Steering Committee. Each Steering Committee member conducts a thorough review and evaluates the application on the following criteria:

  • Proposed project (incl. project timeline)
  • CV applicant
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Detailed Budget (incl. details of institutional support or funding from other agencies)

Funding and tenure:

Maximum $ 2,500

The grant must be used for the project originally approved and should be used within 6 months of notification. If the grant is not used in this time frame, an extension must be requested from and approved by the steering committee.

 

Notification of Award:

Successful applicants will be notified by email within 30 days of the submission deadline, setting forth the amount and conditions of the award. A copy of this email will be sent to the applicant’s supervisor.

Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by email. It should be recognized that the CSDC has a limited amount of funds and, although applications may have merit, there may not be sufficient funds to award all such applications.

 

Incomplete submissions:

All applicants are strongly advised to carefully read and follow the instructions and requirements outlined in the Guidelines. In order to maintain the principle of fairness to all applicants, guidelines must be adhered to in the preparation of the Research Grant application. Non-adherence to the guidelines or incomplete submissions will lead to the rejection (without appeal) of the application. Requiring adherence to the guidelines has the advantage of being unambiguous for applicants, easily enforceable by staff and/or steering committee, as well as fair and equitable for all applicants
