Abstract: “Big data” analyses of images are an exciting frontier for social science research, allowing us to posit new questions and reevaluate old answers in many subfields. This talk provides a basic introduction to concepts and tools used to analyze large quantities of images. We will (briefly) cover supervised and unsupervised learning; convolutional neural nets; and off-the-shelf versus bespoke models. Attendees with also be introduced to Python materials available on Code Ocean for further exploration (no experience with Python is necessary to attend the talk).Nora Webb Williams is an Assistant Professor of Political Science in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she studies the long-term impacts of colonialism and the impact of social media and images on protest mobilization. Her primary methodological interest is in images as data for social science research, with related interests in machine learning, text as data, and causal inference.
